New Delhi: The Supreme Court today held Reliance Communication (RCom) chairman Anil Ambani guilty of contempt of court in a case related to Ericsson India and said he will go to jail if Rs 453 crore in dues is not paid to the telecom equipment maker.
The court also held two directors of RCom guilty. The case was filed by Ericsson India over not clearing its dues of Rs 550 crore after selling its assets to Reliance Jio.
The court tore into the Reliance Communications chairman for what it called a ‘cavalier attitude’ and fined him and two of his directors Rs 1 crore each. Court added that if the said amount is not deposited within a month then it will award a one month jail to them (in addition).
“Anil Ambani and others breached their undertaking,’ the court said, calling it ‘willful disobedience’ of its order that they should repay Ericsson. In a statement, a RCom spokesperson said: ‘We respect the Supreme Court judgement. The RCom Group shall comply with the same.”
