Residents and motorists want speedy completion of the footpath laying project, which is currently on at PS Sivaswamy Road, Chennai.
Only a few months ago, the work on widening the drain was completed at the stretch and now the footpath is being constructed over it.
Some residents say that the drain work happened for a longer time than it was expected that troubled motorists and pedestrians. Residents want this work to be completed soon.
T Mohanakrishnan, a resident of Appar Swamy Koil Street, says, “The drain widening work was started in the month of October itself but for more than two months the work was left incomplete with sand and pipes piled on one side of the road. Also, it reduced the width of the road causing inconvenience to motorists.”
He says the problem is still continuing and wants the work to be completed soon. “During peak hours, traffic congestion here continues to be a a big problem. We want this work to be completed at the earliest,” he adds.
Sivaswamy Salai is a very busy road. However, the ongoing work has added one more problem which is the illegal parking of vehicles on the road.
“People usually park here and ever since the pipe widening work due to which the road was dug up, the vehicles occupied some more space on the road and because of that pedestrians like me continue to find it difficult to walk,” says Sivashankar, a senior citizen.
Some residents, however, feel that an elevated footpath which is to be constructed here will solve the illegal parking menace.
“Since temples and schools are there in the locality, a lot of pedestrians depend on the footpath. Moreover, I believe that once the footpath is built, no longer can one be able to park their vehicles on the stretch which will providing relief to the motorists and shopkeepers,” says Ganesh, a resident of the locality.
