7 Rajiv Gandhi case convicts: Govt cannot force Governor’s hand, says Minister

Chennai: We cannot force the Governor to release the seven convicts in the former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, said Fisheries Minister  D Jayakumar today.

Speaking to mediapersons this morning, the minister said, “The matter is in the hands of the Governor. It is on hold due to the Supreme Court’s verdict. So, only the Governor can decide on it. According to the Constitution, the State government cannot force the Governor to decide on the issue.”

He said this was the AIADMK’s stand on the release of the seven murder convicts.

The seven convicts, including Perarivalan, have been getting support from various Tamil parties for their release as they had served more than the life terms.

Perarivalan’s mother Arputhammal has been the moving force behind the struggle for the release of her son and others.
