Chennai: Work for laying underground EB cables in Selaiyur is expected to begin on Velacheri Main Road and GST Road, at the earliest. Sources said the tender has been floated to commence the work.
According to an EB official, the main stretches will be completed first, followed by the interior areas and secondary roads- all of which will be done in a phased manner. It may be noted that State Electricity Minister P Thangamani had earlier announced that Tambaram will get underground cables at a cost of Rs 443 crore, and that tenders for the same have already been floated.
The project which was supposed to be kickstarted last year, was a non-starter due to unknown reasons. Meanwhile, low-lying EB lines in the locality continue to be a major cause for concern among residents. ‘Wires that were patched after the Vardah cyclone, also pose high risks, as they can break anytime and lead to electrocution’, said a resident.
The locals here also requested officials to find a solution to re-route the high tension wires that are passing through residential areas. ‘We have given several letters stressing the necessity to remove these. If the officials had acted on it, we would not have lost two innocent lives last year,’ said Sasidharan, a resident of Avvai Nagar.
