Chennai: Tamilnadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami yesterday initiated the free laptop scheme for the year 2018-2019 by handing over seven laptops to students at the Secretariat.
School education minister K A Sengottaiyan, Local administration minister S P Velumani and IT Minister M Manikandan were among those present on the occasion.
According to reports, a total of 15.18 lakh laptops at a cost of Rs 1,340.44 crore would be distributed this academic year.
This scheme was first launched in 2011 by the late chief minister and party supremo J Jayalalithaa, and laptops worth Rs 5,552.39 crore benefiting 37.88 lakh students were distributed between the academic years 2011-2012 and 2017-2018. Students studying under government-aided schools and colleges would be benefited by this scheme.
