The Nungambakkam Railway Station is one of the most important stations in the city, connecting several major localities. Despite being busy all day, basic amenities such as clean platforms and restrooms aren’t available here. Also, the station’s hygiene has gone for a toss, as heaps of garbage has been dumped near the staircase by the entrance of the station, close to the service lane.
“It has been the same way since 2016,” says Madhumitha, a commuter. “The dumped waste hinders passenger movement and raises a stink as well. There are concerns about open defecation near the railway track and by the staircase too,” she adds.
Passengers also allege that it is the absence of dustbins that has resulted in this mess, while other frequent commuters and street vendors blame the sweepers for dumping the refuse.
But when News Today reached out to the Railway officials, they blamed the passengers for not helping them maintain the cleanliness of the station’s premises, while refusing to comment on the waste pile. Shanmathi, a passenger, also reiterated that urgent attention is needed here.
