G Appavu

G Appavu of Kodambakkam, is a teacher with a difference. For, he combines Tamil film songs and peppers the lyrics with subject concepts and explains it to his students. News Today meets up with him for a chat.

“I completed my education at Annamalai University. I also pursued Microsoft Solution Development courses at a private institute,” he says.

About his work life, he states, “I initially worked as a teacher for students up to the 10th grade. I later worked as an assistant manager for a private firm, but again returned to teaching.”

Through Nirmal NGO, Appavu, who has been working as a Maths teacher for the past 17 years, promotes the ‘Think Globally, Act Locally’ programme.

“In this, we conduct campaigns for residents to know more about the dangers of global warming. During one such session, a participant was a fan of the ‘Naaku Mukka’ song. So I decided to change my manner of explaining. I used this song and with that rhythm, I taught him the basics of global warming,” he recalls.

This incident made him realise that, it is essential to teach concepts in an engaging way. “It is important to know that you can never force a concept to your students. They should be taught with respect,” he concludes.
