Chennai: With just one more day left for the filing of nominations for the Lok Sabha polls in Tamilnadu, prominent candidates of various parties filed their papers today.
Some of them include M Thambi Dhurai (AIADMK), Tamiliasi Soundararajan and H Raja (BJP), Kanimozhi, Thamizhachi Thangapandian, Kalanithi Veerasamy (DMK) and Kameela Naasser (Makkal Needhi Maiam).
Filing of nomination papers for the 2019 general elections in the State began 19 March. The general elections and by-elections being conducted on 18 April in Tamilnadu. The last date of filing nomination is 26 March (tomorrow) and the nominations will be scrutinised 27 March. The last date to withdraw nominations is 29 March. The final candidates list will be released on the same day.
Polls will be held in Tamilnadu in the second phase along with Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Manipur, Odisha, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Puducherry. It may be noted that Seventeen States, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra and West Bengal and Union Territories Andaman, Lakshadweep and Chandigarh are going to the polls in First phase 11 April.
Meanwhile, campaigning has hit a feverish pitch across the State. Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami addressed rallies in Vellore yesterday and will campaign in the city today. Deputy Chief Minister O Pannerselvam canvassed for votes in Kanchipuram and DMK president visited constituencies in Chennai yesterday.
Meanwhile, the Congress released its ninth list of candidates last night and announced its decision to field Karti Chidambaram, son of former Finance Minister P Chidambaram from Sivaganga. Karti Chidambaram is being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate and the CBI in several cases, including one relating to Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance to INX Media for receiving foreign funds to the tune of Rs. 305 crore when his father was the Finance Minister.
