Coimbatore: CPI-M secretary K Balakrishnan yesterday slammed the Election Commission of India and stated that it functioned as a puppet in the hands of BJP.
Speaking to reporters, he claimed that even if a candidate from opposition parties garlanded a statue cases were booked against them for violating code of conduct.
He said election officers working for long in the same post must be replaced by new people for free and fair functioning. The CPI(M) would submit a memorandum to the chief electoral officer in this regard very soon he said.
He accused the EC of taking double standards in allotment of symbols to parties, thus proving that it was functioning like a puppet in the hands of the ruling BJP at the Centre.
He further lashed out at Tamilnadu BJP president Tamilisai Soundararajan for remarking that the police firing over the Sterlite issue that left 13 people dead in the district was to save 1,000 people who had gathered there.
