Six held for kidnap at Kilpauk

Chennai: The city police arrested six persons for kidnapping a man at Kilpauk yesterday. The police are searching for more persons in connection with the crime.

According to the police, Rahul Chandak (28) from Sowcarpet worked for a mobile phone shop. Last evening, he was with his friends at Kilpauk when a man took him aside to speak to him.

At 8 pm, Rahul called up his shop owner and told him that he had been kidnapped by a gang. The shop owner later told the police that he had received threatening calls from anonymous persons asking for Rs 5 lakh as ransom for Rahul.

Subsequently, Rahul’s brother Rohit lodged a complaint with the Kilpauk police. A special team of Assistant Commissioner Jagadeeshwaran, Inspector Ponraj and Sub-Inspector Subbiah began the probe.

They began tracking Rahul’s phone. At 10.30 pm, police intercepted an auto which was coming at high speed on Mount Road. Two bikes which were following the auto tried to speed away. However, one was caught. The police arrested the occupants, Mahesh (29) from Seven Wells, Sharath Kumar (27), Rajan (32), Tamilarasan (24), Vimal and Surya and rescued Rahul.

The police said the gang operated from Sowcarpet and had been planning the kidnap for over a week.
