Hyderabad professor held for demanding bribe from students

Hyderabad: B Balaji, a professor of Osmania Medical College, was arrested on Thursday for allegedly demanding bribe from students to pass them in examination.

The Sleuths of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) searched his office and residence based on a complaint lodged by students. Balaji is the head of the General Medicine Department at the Osmania Medical College.

Documents pertaining to collection of money from students and some papers related to properties registered in the name of Balaji and his family members were found by the officials.

According to media reports, on 2 March, Balaji had told some students that they had not done well in their exams and are at a risk of failing. He then demanded Rs 50,000 from each student. Through WhatsApp he forwarded a photograph of a cheque of a bank account in the name of R Srinu and asked them to send screenshots of the transaction details. The students had then transferred Rs 75,000 into the account. They later lodged a complaint with the ACB, following which the arrest was made.
