Theatrekaran, a drama troupe founded by youngsters at West Mambalam, staged a street play on water, in English and Tamil, recently.
A press release said, the troupe consisting of around 15 young men and women took up the said subject, to stress on the necessity to preserve water at various levels.
The play also briefs about the data given by World Health Organisation on decreasing resources all over the world.
Speaking to News Today, Sabarivas and Raghavendra, founder members of the unit and longtime residents of West Mambalam, said, “The scarcity situation is worsening year after year. Our team discussed in length and brought out this play that focuses on minimal usage of water in bathrooms, wash areas, vessel cleaning in domestic and also at working spots and marriage halls.”
To make the show interesting, the team used the popular cartoon character, Popeye, to convey its message effectively.
About this, Sabarivas said, “Sai Vignesh played the role of Popeye, while Sri Venkatesh and Sathya did the narration in English and Tamil respectively. It was divided into various parts, highlighting points like three minutes bathing, avoiding running water from tap for vessel cleaning and distributing unused pet bottles in marriages to needy people at slums and other areas.”
The play so far staged in public places and also at few corporates, has won the praise of many, the release added.
“When we brought out this idea of saving water through a show, Larsen and Toubro Limited came forward to our support and encouraged us to stage the same in their premises. This boosted our confidence and we went on to showcase the same at various public places,” he said.
“We also have plans to perform in educational institutions and residential colonies in future,” he added. Theatrekaran will also celebrate World Theatre Day on 30 and 31 March at West Mambalam, by organising a series of story-telling sessions for the public.
