Chennai : The Election Commission of India today issued a stay order on the release of film PM Narendra Modi till the polls are over.
The Election Commission of India said biopics cannot be released during elections.
The poll panel’s order came just a day ahead of the release of the movie.
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court had dismissed a petition filed by a Congress activist seeking stay on the release of the biopic and said the Election Commission would be an “appropriate” place to seek the redressal.
The apex court had said it was not entertaining the petition for the stay on the release of the film as it was “premature” since the movie is yet to be certified by the Censor Board.
Yesterday, after the Supreme Court dismissed the petition, actor Vivek Oberoi, who plays Narendra Modi in the film, took to his Twitter page to hail the apex court’s decision and declare the new release date of the movie – 11 April 2019.
Starring Vivek Oberoi in the title role, the movie chronicles the life of Modi from his childhood days till his rise as Prime Minister.
