Chennai: Just a day after the general elections in Tamilnadu and by-polls in 18 State Assembly constituencies, TTV Dhinakaran has decided to register Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) as a political party. He is expected to assume charge as its general secretary.
The candidates representing AMMK faced the polls yesterday as independents under a common symbol after the Supreme Court granted permission for them to do so a few weeks back. During the court hearing for the same, AMMK had agreed to register itself as a political party soon. It was expected at that time that V K Sasikala would become the general secretary of the party and Dhinakaran would be the deputy.
However, as Sasikala is currently serving jail time in the disproportionate asset case and there is no sign of her immediate release, Dhinakaran will assume charge of the party, sources said. This move could also facilitate Sasikala to stake a claim for the rights of holding AIADMK’s reigns.
It is to be noted that in the immediate aftermath of J Jayalalithaa’s death, Sasikala assumed control of the party briefly. However, a majority of the MLAs and MPs shifted allegiance to the factions led by Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and Deputy CM O Panneerselvam after she was jailed.
The 18 MLAs who supported TTV Dhinakaran were disqualified and the by-polls for the constituencies they held happened yesterday.
