Chennai: The Railway Protection Force (RPF) foiled an attempt to smuggle 260 kg red sanders from Chennai Central to New Delhi Sunday evening and arrested the person who was transporting it.
Yesterday, the smuggler, Mahesh Singh (43), boarded the Grand Trunk Express bound for New Delhi from the Chennai Central, with big covered parcels.
The Railway police grew suspicious of his activity and apprehended him. Upon opening the packages, they discovered red sander logs inside. They arrested Mahesh and took him to the police station.
Mahesh revealed to the police that he hails from Jharkhand and he was smuggling the red sander logs for his friend in New Delhi. Police are investigating as to the source of the red sanders and trying to obtain information on the identity of the people who provided Mahesh the package. It is estimated that seized 260 kg red sanders is worth Rs 7.80 lakh in the market.
