Chennai: Summer is here. So is the humble vadu manga (baby mango). The start of this season is seeing its arrival in large quantities in market areas like Arya Gowda Road and Station Road at West Mambalam, so to say. “There is a high demand for the tiny fruit. I sell several kilograms of this a day,” said Kanniappan, a vendor here.
While the kaambu vadu (mango with branch intact) is sold at Rs 200 a kilogram, other varieties are offered at Rs 160 a kilogram. “The season is seeing a good produce of vadu manga, and hence we are able to cater to the demands, after procuring it from various places in Andhra Pradesh and Tamilnadu,” he said, adding, “Vadu with kaambu will last for long and is therefore highly pricedÂ’,” he pointed out. Similarly, vadam sheets can also be seen in various terraces across the neighbourhood, as the womenfolk are busy preparing these rice crispies.
