2019 polls: AP CEO says he was functioning strictly under norms

Amaravati: “I will not react to what the Chief Minister wrote in the letter (to the Chief Election Commissioner). I will only implement the instructions issued by the CEC,” said Andhra Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer Gopal Krishna Dwivedi yesterday.

He was speaking about the allegations charged against him by the Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu who said that the CEO was exceeding his jurisdiction in implementing the Model Code of Conduct in the State during the election period.

Naidu had written to CEC Sunil Arora that in the name of implementing the MCC, the CEO was exceeding his jurisdiction. He pointed out to the bar being imposed on holding official review meetings and contended that the ECI had no authority to bar an elected government from discharging its legitimate duties entrusted by the Constitution of India.

Speaking to reporters over the matter, the CEO said that he was not concerned if MCC was being implemented or not in other states, the ECI will look into it. And that he had already circulated copies of the MCC to all political parties and candidates. He asserted that he was following what was in the MCC.
