Chennai: On 21 September 2016, the bhoomi pooja was performed for the community hall on 80 Feet Road. The work progressed to a certain extent and it did not go further after that due to lack of funds. Now things seem to work on positive note.
Speaking to News Today, a senior Corporation official said, “The structural works have been completed. Only painting, flooring work have to be done apart from constructing a kitchen.”
“A sum of Rs 40 lakh was allotted for the community hall, where there will be two floors and parking facilities. Further, Rs 25 lakh was sanctioned from South Chennai MP’s fund. Due to the model code of conduct in force, it has not been released. Once it is lifted, the money would be sanctioned. We will call for new tenders and once it is done, the work will be completed within 15 to 20 days,” the official said.
Residents of the neighbourhood have been requesting the Corporation to take steps for constructing a community hall as the one – Arignar Anna Community hall (opposite Udhayam Theatre) at Ashok Nagar – was demolished for the Metro Rail project.
The issue was taken up at the Corporation Council meeting and a resolution was passed to construct a new hall. Officials approached Tamilnadu Housing Board (TNHB) to allot its vacant lands at P T Rajan Salai and Ramasamy Salai junction and Kamarajar Salai and Jeevanandam Salai junction.
“After inspecting various places, we decided to construct the hall at 80 Ft Road by demolishing an existing toilet,” officials said.
People living at Rani Anna Nagar, Sivalingapuram, Vijayaragavapuram, Sathya Gardens, MGR Nagar, Nesapakkam and other areas at K K Nagar would benefit once the community hall is constructed.
“It has been one of the long-pending requests from residents at K K Nagar. Once the hall is constructed, the civic body should see that it is maintained properly,” said a cross-section of residents.
