Visakhapatnam: The annual Chandanotsavam or the Nijaroopa Darshanam Day was celebrated at the Varaha Lakhsmi Narasimha Swamy hill temple yesterday. Scores of devotees from Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Chhattisgarh thronged the shrine.

It is the day when devotees get to see the Lord Nirjaroopam in his actual form, because on normal days, the deity is covered with Sandalwood paste.

On Chandanotsavam, the sandalwood paste is removed and the deity is covered with a fresh layer of sandalwood paste brought from Andhra Pradesh, Chennai and other areas.

on Tuesday morning, after the suprabhatam, temple priests removed the sandalwood paste using small sized gold and silver spades and performed Abhishekam with water from Gangadhara.

Family members of the temple hereditary trustee P Ashok Gajapathi Raju had darshan in the early hours and later temple administration officials presented silk clothes to the deity on behalf of the state government. Arrangements were made by the police to maintain law and order during the festival.
