Chennai: Veteran writer and Sahitya Akademi winner Thoppil Mohammed Meeran passed away in Tirunelveli today.
He was 75 and is survived by wife Jaleela Meeran and children Shameem Ahamed and Mirzad Ahamed.
He was honoured with the highest Indian award for writers, Sahitya Akademi Award, in 1997 for his novel ‘Saivu Narkali’ (The Reclining Chair).
He was also recipient of various other honours. He hailed from Thengai Pattinam village in Kanyakumari district.
