Chennai: This is a summer camp with a twist. B Jayasri, a youngster in T Nagar, is organising ‘Silambam’ training sessions, free of cost, at SS Jain College for Women, Madley Road.
Speaking to this paper, Jayasri said, “My mother motivated me to learn different kinds of art forms. I eventually learnt Silambam, which is our traditional art of fighting. I have now decided to impart the same to young boys and girls and hence started the free programme.”
Jayasri is providing training on this form for the past three years and has coached many youngsters.
She was also honoured by the State for doing the service, free of cost.
So how long does it take to learn?
“The interest to learn is all the more important and with continuous practice, one can learn within few weeks. But just learning is not enough, he or she should attend the classes regularly to keep the ‘stick flow’ in the right direction and angle,” she said.
The youngster is doing her third year of Bachelor of Commerce. The free classes will be held daily between 6.30 and 8.30 pm in the college premises, it is informed.
