Sabarimala hill temple opens for 5-day monthly pooja

Sabarimala: Marking the Malayalam month of Idavam the Lord Ayyappa temple opened for the five-day monthly poojas yesterday evening.

The sanctum sanctorum of the temple was opened by chief priest V N Vasudevan Namboothiri in the presence of tantri Kandararu Rajeevaru.

The others present for the temple opening were Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) President A Padmakumar, board member K P Sankardas, Sabarimala Special Commissioner and district judge Manoj.

Customary pujas and rituals, including ‘neyyabhishekam‘, ‘kalabhabhishekam‘ and ‘padi puja’ would be conducted in the coming days, said a press release. A large number of devotees visited the temple yesterday, said the TDB release.

The temple would be again closed on 19 May. Massive protests were held across Kerala after the Supreme Court last year lifted the centuries-old ban on the entry of women of menstrual age into the hill shrine.
