Miffed Election Commissioner Ashok Lavasa opts out of EC meetings

New Delhi: Election Commissioner Ashok Lavasa has recused himself from attending meetings of the Election Commission on deciding violations of the Model Code of Conduct over what he claimed was his “minority decisions going unrecorded”.

“I am being forced to stay away from the meetings of the full commission since minority decisions are not being recorded,” Lavasa wrote to the Chief Election Commissioner 4 May. “My participation in the deliberations of the Commission becomes meaningless since my minority decisions go unrecorded,” Lavasa said in the letter.

“I might consider taking recourse to other measures aimed at restoring the lawful functioning of the Commission in terms of recording minority decisions,” he added.

The Congress today hit out at the Modi government over Lavasa recusing himself from EC meetings to discuss poll code violations, saying erosion of institutional integrity is the hallmark of the present dispensation.
