Chennai: Residents of Venkataraman Nagar, Chrompet, want authorities to take action against conservancy staff who burn waste on the road. They also seek an extra bin in the area.
Speaking to News Today, they said, “It is shocking to see the Municipality itself violating environmental norms by polluting the space. The main role of the conservancy staff is to collect, transport and recycle the waste. But other than doing so, here in Venkataraman Nagar, they are collecting and burning the garbage on the road. Such actions are strictly condemnable.”
Rajesh who takes a walk around here, said, “I am an Asthma patient. I used to do yoga and have a walk around the area. But now, I am unable to do so, due to this issue. I have not gone walking for two weeks now. I have also warned them from doing so, a couple of times. But they don’t seem to pay heed. The authorities should take stringent action against them. If nothing works, I will take the issue to the Municipal Commissioner to find a solution.”
Suresh, a motorist said, “It is hard to travel in the lane where the bins are kept. Eyes start turning itchy and watery whenever we pass by, due to the smoke caused by burning garbage. Since these fumes are harmful to health, I want authorities to act on the pleas.”
