Man throws acid at 8 drunk neighbours in Chennai


Chennai: Eight persons are undergoing treatment after acid was thrown at them by a neighbour in Nerkundram.

The incident took place at an apartment complex in Muniyappa Nagar.

The accused Kannappan (33), a silver smith, lived on the third floor of the building with his wife Ranjani, a homemaker and his brother Baskar, a painter. On the second floor, eight men from Ariyalur who worked as labourers at Koyambedu market shared an apartment.

Last night, the men were drinking on the terrace when Kannappan and Baskar objected to it. However, the men responded in an aggressive manner and continued drinking and making loud noises.

When the brothers objected again, the gang attacked them. Ranjani who intervened too was  assaulted. While she suffered injuries on her hand, Basker sustained a blow on his head. Following this, Kannapan took the acid he uses at work and flung it on the men.

The injured were identified as Alagumuthu (38), Karuppusamy (32), Vanjinathan (18), Velmurugan (23), Veeraswamy (23), Ashok (19) and Velmurugan (25).

They were rushed to Government Kilpauk Hospital for treatment. Koyambedu police have registered a case. They have detained Kannappan.
