Chennai: The Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) top brass has called for a meeting this morning at the party office in Ashok Nagar to discuss the situation post-elections.
The AMMK, the splinter group of the AIADMK, led by T T V Dhinakaran, took a hit in the 2019 general elections where it even lost deposit in some constituencies.
Though it was expected to do well and be the X-factor that would change the election dynamics in Tamilnadu, the end result showed that it fizzled out as a non-entity. Its MP candidates contested as Independents – but had a common symbol, the gift pack – as the party was not registered with the Election Commission of India then.
Even the voluble Thanga Tamilselvan and Vetrivel and Palaniappan, all disqualified MLAs, could not nudge people to vote for them.
The same happened with the Assembly by-polls where 22 seats were up for grabs. It turned out to be a straight fight between the AIADMK and DMK with the AIADMK pocketing 9 seats and the DMK, the rest of the seats (13).
It is expected that today’s meeting would discuss the election debacle and the way ahead for the fledgling party that is headed by general secretary Dhinakaran.
