HC prohibits monetising Ilaiyaraja’s songs without his permission

Chennai: Monetising and exploiting music composer Ilaiyaraja’s songs in reality shows on TV, concerts and online radio channels without his permission is prohibited said the Madras High Court yesterday.

The court had earlier passed an interim order and yesterday confirmed it. The order was passed by Justice Anita Sumanth.

The maestro had in 2014 filed a civil suit against Agi Music, Echo Recording, Giri Trading Company, among others. He had alleged copyright infringement and monetising his songs by these companies.

The maestro has been in the industry for four decades and has composed music for more than 1,000 movies. A separate suit was moved by Agi Music in 2013. The company accused Ilaiyaraaja of having breached the terms of an agreement with it; however, the court dismissed it.
