Chennai: The Porur-Kundrathur junction is one of the busiest spots in the locality. The intersection, especially, is tightly packed with vehicles during peak hours. As it is, this stretch is very narrow, and encroachments take up most of the space, rue commuters.
“For a long time, the Highways Department has been saying that they are planning to widen the Kundrathur Main Road. But nothing has been done about it yet. Apart from other commuters, a huge number of people who work at the nearby IT Park take this route regularly. Encroachments along the stretch hinder vehicle movement and contribute to traffic congestion,” says Rajalakshmi, a resident of Kundrathur.
“A few years back, a pedestrian path was laid here by the government. But slowly street vendors started putting up small petty shops on it and people are forced to walk the road instead,” she adds.
“I used to sell vegetables in and around Porur, but the demand here at the junction is very good. So I set my shop here. Sales are good as a number of working people commute through this route,” defends Sundari, a vegetable vendor.
However, the commuters want the authorities to look into the matter and resolve it at the earliest.
