Erode: In a tragic incident, a wild elephant trampled a 72-year-old retired forest guard to death yesterday.
According to a media report, the deceased has been identified as Thavasiappan. He was living in Arepalayam forest area of Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve. He had apparently entered the forest in search of his cattle and came in contact with the elephant.
The jumbo chased and trampled him before escaping into the jungles. Thavasiappan was found by some villagers, and they subsequently informed the forest officials about his death. Police have registered a case and are investigating.
