Fishermen in TN protest over low fish price, go on indefinite strike

Rameswaram: Accusing the export companies of charging low prices for prawns and fishes, the fishermen went on indefinite strike yesterday.

11 fishermen associations took part in a urgent meeting regarding the matter. In the meeting, it was discussed that the intervention of the State government would be sought. If a fair deal wasn’t offered the government should set up procurement centres to buy fish directly from fishermen.

Speaking to reporters, Rameswaram Fishermen Association President P Sesuraja said huge money towards fuel, wages for fishing labourers and other costs were spent by the boat owners.

It is reported that the price of prawn per kg was being offered at Rs 300 against the original price of Rs 550.
