Police launch crackdown on rowdies in Chennai

Chennai: The city police have launched a crackdown on rowdies. Last night, they arrested notorious history-sheeter Binu Pappachan (46) apart from two rowdies who were held with a pistol which they used to fire at their associate.

The police said Binu was arrested at Maduravoyal ByPass to Tambaram ByPass Road. “He was waiting in a four-wheeler near a bridge,” the police said, adding that he was arrested on a tip-off.

Binu was arrested at Egmore in March during a vehicle check and granted bail. He has since been absconding.

The police said he was hiding in Puducherry and had come to meet his family at Kolathur. A native of Thrissur in Kerala, Binu’s parents are settled at Vinayagapuram in Choolaimedu. He has 28 cases against him, including four murder cases reported in Thousand Lights, Koyambedu, Poonamallee and Arumbakkam.

In an unrelated case, yesterday, the police were shocked when rowdy D Senthil alias Sudusoru came to Government Stanley hospital with a bullet in his body.

He told the doctors that two other rowdies, J Alexander and P T Ramesh, who were subsequently arrested, had used a gun to shoot at him 7 June. The police arrested the duo.

On 15 June, in an encounter operation, the police gunned down Vallarasan (20) behind Madhavaram New Bus Terminus. The police said they resorted to opening fire after Vallarasan left a constable and two sub-inspectors grievously injured using a machete. Vallarasan was involved in a murder case, attempt to murder, robberies and snatching.
