‘Pasumai Ura Kudil’ collects garbage, converts it into manure

Municipal workers segregating waste at ‘Pasumai Ura Kudil’ at Ambedkar Nagar, Tambaram.

Chennai: As part of the Tambaram Municipality’s initiative to segregate waste at source and make Selaiyur more greener, a ‘Pasumai Ura Kudil’ (micro compost yard) is functioning at Ambedkar Nagar.

The facility will be used to collect kitchen, garden and food waste from the households and turn them into manure. “The bio-degradable waste will be collected for six days a week and non-biodegradable trash will be collected every Wednesday. On an average, three tonnes of garbage is received here,” said an official.

“The process of converting waste into manure will be completed in 40 days and the fertiliser will be given free of cost to residents,” said Kuppusamy, the area supervisor.

Amudha, a Municipality worker said, “We first separate the bio-degradable from the non bio-degradable. Vegetables and fruits are ground and stored in a pit for 40 days. During this period, it becomes manure after which it will be packeted and given to people.’

Residents meanwhile appreciated the move and felt that this will help in keeping the area clean and with the recent trend of home gardening, these fertilisers will come in handy.

Kala, a resident of Indra Nagar stated that the facility would be beneficial if it is done on a regular basis, while Karthik who lives here, opined that people should be responsible and help the conservancy workers by segregating the garbage at home itself.

The Municipality, meanwhile, has requested the locals to cooperate with the authorities in this initiative, it is learnt.
