Chennai: The customs officials at the Chennai International airport seized gold worth Rs 34 lakh and foreign currencies worth Rs 6 lakh from passengers. The seizures were made under Customs Act 1962.
According to a media report, a passenger who had arrived from Malaysia was intercepted and gold worth Rs 13 lakh was recovered from him. The air intelligence unit is said to have acted on a tip-off.
In another incident, gold worth Rs 21 lakh was found concealed in the inner garments of two passengers. Both had arrived from Kuwait.
In an unrelated incident the same day, a Dubai-bound passenger was found moving around in a suspicious manner. On Interception, 33,500 Saudi Riyals worth Indian money of Rs 6 lakh was retried from his baggage.
