Shri Krishnaswamy College for Women observed ‘World Elder Abuse Awareness Day’ on 18 June. A press release said, Dr V S Natarajan, senior geriatrician, founder and chairman Dr V S Natarajan Geriatric Foundation addressed the ways in which elders are being abused which includes mental, physical, verbal and financial abuse.
This is an important reason for loneliness in old age. The mindset of the youth should change and they should come forward to offer love and affection in abundance.
Awareness programmes should be conducted on a regular basis and asked the elders to get regular medical check-ups done as well as to try and be independent as possible. “The government should come up with long-term care centres for the ailing senior citizens. Syllabus about the value of elders should be included in the school curriculum, he said.
A short film ‘Let us respect our elders’ produced by Dr V S Natarajan was screened for the students.
Revathy, dean, Shri Krishnammal College for Women delivered welcome address, Geetha Mani, Principal, Shri Krishnammal College for Women took part in the function.
