Chennai: The city police are interrogating a man who is alleged to have raped and murdered a four-and-a-half-year-old at Thirumullaivoyal yesterday.
Police said the accused is a 60-year-old man, an army veteran and a neighbour of the girl. He has not yet confessed to the crime, sources said.
Police took the man into custody after some people spotted him near the girl’s house and the broken bangles of the girl were allegedly found in his bedroom.
Yesterday, the victim’s body was found with injury marks in a gunny bag tied with a string, in a bucket of water in the bathroom. The incident took place as the girl was alone at home, as her mother and brother, a class two student, had gone to after-school classes.
The girl’s mother returned and found the girl missing with the main door of the house open. Thirumullaivoyal police are conducting further inquiries.
