Will Mugilan be produced in court?

Chennai: Environmental activist R S Mugilan is expected to be produced in Egmore Court today.

According to sources, he was supposed to be produced in court yesterday. However, while he was about to be taken to court he complained of chest pain and was rushed to Stanley Government hospital.

He continued to be in hospital this morning; however, sources say he would be produced in court later in the day. Mugilan, an activist working against the setting up of an Away from Reactor (AFR) facility at the Kudankulam nuclear power plant, had been missing since February.

He reportedly went missing an hour after boarding a Madurai-bound train but on Saturday, he was traced to Tirupati. He appeared weak and showed signs of disoriented behaviour. He had also reportedly claimed he was bitten by a dog a week ago.

However, the police immediately arrested him in an alleged sexual abuse case filed against him. The case is now under investigation by the CB-CID on the court’s direction.

Mugilan, grilled for 15 hours, did not disclose to the police regarding his disappearance. He was produced in the CB-CID headquarters office in Chennai in the early hours of Sunday, the source said.

The Crime Branch CID said the activist was arrested for allegedly raping a woman after falsely promising to marry her in Karur district.

The activist was involved in several protests against the nuclear power plant in Tirunelveli district, the hydrocarbon project in Pudukottai district and the anti-Sterlite agitation in Thoothukudi district.
