Ashok Nagar Circle Library holds reading event

Students reading books at Government Girls Higher Secondary School in Ashok Nagar as part of Vaasipu Iyakkam project.

Chennai: Ashok Nagar Circle Library is conducting ‘Vaasipu Iyakkam 2022’ till 18 July, following instructions from the Directorate of Public Libraries and Chennai District Library office.

‘Vaasipu Iyakkam 2022’ project aims to increase the reading habit among government school and college students. It began 19 June.

Librarian S Murugan conducted an event at MGR Nagar Government Higher Secondary School, where students were given books to read. The same event was also held at Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Ashok Nagar.

“Nowadays reading habit is decreasing day-by-day. We should encourage children to read from a very young age. Our school has library and we have given 10 books to each class from 6 to 10. They would use it whenever they have free classes,” said Government Girls Higher Secondary School principal Saraswathi.

Various competitions like drawing, oratory, debate on social issues will be conducted as part of the project. “Best students from the schools around the neighbourhood will compete with others in the grand event to be held on the library premises 17 July,” said librarian Murugan.

M S Swaminathan Research Foundation along with Directorate of Public Libraries is organising the event. The Indian Library Movement’s event will be held in 19 States backed by the foundation. The main motto of ‘Vaasipu Iyakkam 2022’ is to make book reading a habit among 300 million people in India targeting underprivileged students and people.
