Sewage overflow at Periapalli Street irks residents

Chennai: The residents living in Periapalli Street are grappling with the issue of sewage overflow for so long and despite repeated complaints, residents allege that no action has been taken to stop the recurring problem.

A resident of the locality, Jean Lezarus says, “Our family has been residing in the street for more than 150 years and the problem of overflow of sewage in the street has been there for more than two years now. It all arises from a sewage point in front of a house in the locality and whenever the sewage flow inside gets stuck, it overflows outside on the street.”

“Because of the sewage overflow, the entire street stinks and we are not even able to cook our food. Also, this being a narrow street, people are finding it difficult to walk on the stretch as speeding vehicles splash the water on them,” says Lezarus.

He says that this has been happening repeatedly and despite giving complaints in the metro water office they are not coming forward for a solution. “The officials blame that they are helpless in this case as it is the responsibility of the people in that household to initiate steps to stop the sewage overflow. But we the residents pay the tax and when the sewage overflows on the road from the sewage outlet isn’t it the responsibility of the concerned officials to look at the problem and find a solution?” he asks.

He says that some of the residents would usually take steps to stop the flow of it by blocking it with stones or putting sand on top of it to reduce the intensity of the stink. “The people residing in the street should not be affected because of this and it is the responsibility of the corporation to ensure that the sewage does not overflow.”
