Special police teams hunt for students involved in bus ‘Route Thala’ fight

Chennai: The city police took three college students into custody and are searching for two more after a brutal fight on Poonamallee High Road at Arumbakkam yesterday over who the ‘route thala’ (leader of bus trips) was.

The video of the fight, which has gone viral on social media, sent shock waves among people as it showed two gangs of students assaulting each other with weapons including sickles.

While two students who were attacked with machetes were admitted to a government hospital, a special police team was formed to nab others involved in the assault which took place in broad daylight.

Police caught three youngsters- Madhan (20), Siruthai (20), and Vicky (21). Police said, Vicky dropped out of college last year.

It is said that the gangs fought over who would be the ‘route thala’ in the Poonamallee to Parry’s Corner route.

Recently, a similar fight took place over the same issue. Where the Poonamallee ‘route’ students attacked their Parry’s Corner route counterparts. Tuesday’s assault was said to be its fallout.
Four special teams have been formed under the supervision of Additional Commissioner (North) R Dhinakaran to nab the remaining suspects.
