Chennai: Normally known for its hot temperature, Vellore is now witnessing the political heat as well, courtesy the 5 August Lok Sabha election.
As the election fever is gripping Vellore, leaders of the two main Dravidian giants, AIADMK and DMK, are campaigning in the constituency today to gather votes for their respective candidates.
DMK president M K Stalin began his campaign from the Vellore Uzhavar Sandhai this morning.
He sought votes from people during his morning walk and also took selfies with them. Stalin will be stationed in Vellore for three days and will carry out the campaign.
Chief Minister and AIADMK joint coordinator Edappadi K Palaniswami is also slated to begin his election campaign later today. Sources said the CM will carry out a whirlwind tour of Vellore constituency.
On the first day, Palaniswami would address public meetings at Vaaniyambai and Ambur and on 28 July at Keezhvaidhyanarkuppam and Gudiyatham.
On 2 August, the Chief Minister would address meetings at Anaicut and Vellore. It may be recalled that DMK has fielded the party treasurer Durai Murugan’s son Kathir Anand as the candidate for the Vellore Lok Sabha election. He will be competing against A C Shanmugam who has been fielded by the AIADMK. The polling will be held on 5 August and counting of votes will be take up on 9 August.
The elections were earlier scheduled for 18 April, but was rescinded following seizure of cash from the premises of Opposition DMK candidate Kathir Anand.
The elections would witness a three-cornered contest, though the fight would be between the AIADMK and the DMK. The third nominee in fray is Deepalakshmi of Naam Tamizhar Katch of actor-director Seeman.
