Lankan navy chases away 3,000 TN fishermen

Rameswaram: The Sri Lankan navy allegedly chased away 3,000 Tamilnadu fishermen while they were fishing near near Katchatheevu on Tuesday.

A media report said the men had gone to Katchatheevu in over 500 boats the previous day. The Lankan navy had apparently arrived and warned them to leave their territorial waters and the fishermen were forced to return without catch.

Speaking to a media agency, Rameswaram Fishermen’s Association president S Eemrit asked the State and Central governments to ensure that fishermen could fish without fear on the Lankan navy.

This comes a day after seven Tamilnadu fishermen were arrested by the island nation’s naval officers and charged them with poaching in their territory.
