Chennai: A major fire broke out at a BSNL office at Krishnan Koil Street, Mannady, early this morning.
The fire gutted documents and equipment in the five-storeyed building. However, no casualty was reported in the incident.
At 5 am, those living in the area noticed smoke emanating from the first floor of the building and informed the fire station’s emergency number.
Soon, the fire had spread till the fifth floor of the building. Nearly, 15 fire tenders from 15 places including Royapuram, Egmore, Thiruvottiyur, Esplanade and Washermenpet arrived at the spot.
About 80 firemen were involved in bringing the situation under control by using water from several Metrowater tankers. Joint Director, Fire and Rescue Services, Northern Region, M Shahul Hameed, visited the spot.
It is said the third floor was badly affected. The fire spread quickly as the office had many cables and wires.
Broadband connection in several areas including Port, Flower Bazaar and Thiruvottiyur were affected this morning.
About 19,000 phone services and 30 mobile phone tower connections were disrupted. Servers used for public distribution system (PDS) were also affected.
