Chennai: The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department of the Tamilnadu government has said Rs 3.35 crore has been collected in the hundials set up near the Athi Varadar deity in Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple in Kanchipuram.
Reports state that gold and silver have also been found in the hundials. This is apart from the money that the devotees drop in the priests’ plate when they do arathi.
The Athi Vardar vaibhavam, as the locals call it, has been drawing devotees and pilgrims in lakhs. Till two days ago, the number of pilgrims who had had darshan of the deity was stated to be 34 lakh.
Almost all devotees wish to drop money into the hundial and there are about half-a-dozen hundials set up near the deity who is placed in the Vasantha Mandapam of the temple.
