Chennai: A mini-marathon is being hosted by Porur Makkal Sevai Maiyam today (11 August) at 10th Cross Street, Mangala Nagar.
The people who secure the first three places will be awarded trophies, and 25 other participants of the event will be given constellation prizes.
Also, there is no age limit for the participants. Assistant commissioner of police, B Sampath will be heading the event.
“Every year, we conduct this mini-marathon and locals participate in it enthusiastically. This develops good sportsmanship among them as it happens to be a good medium to know about your neighbours well. The association cares to organize the event properly, and the rules and regulations will be explained in detail to the runners,” said Surya Prakash, a member of this association.
“For all those who are participating in the run, shoes are a must. Basic facilities will be provided for the participants, and all they have to do is participate with courage and win it,” he added.
Surya Prakash further said, “Almost all people here in our area are IT professionals. Their working style doesn’t allow them to move anywhere other than sitting in front of computers the whole day. This affects their fitness largely. Also, the food they intake makes them obese. To create an awareness about this, we are conducting this mini-marathon. Not stopping with this, we also recommend the participants to practise yoga/exercise for a healthier lifestyle.”
Speaking about the marathon, a resident of Mangala Nagar said, “The association conducts various kinds of activities that are aimed at bringing the residents together. This is one of them. The event is also aimed at raising the awareness about fitness as it is essential for the current generation.”
