Actor Kanagaraj speaks about playing Gandhi in films

Chennai: While Independence Day might be a time to retrospect on certain issues for most of us, how does it feel for someone who has made a career playing one of the greatest freedom fighters ever.

Meet Kanagaraj of the neighbourhood, who resembles Mahatma Gandhi, and is also a Gandhian by nature.

Popularly called as ‘Gandhi Kanagaraj’, the Vyasar Street resident, has acted in films and television serials as Gandhi himself.

Speaking to News Today, he said, “Ever since I was selected by a director for acting as Gandhi in a film, I started reading and understanding the leader and his principles.”

To mark the 150th birth anniversary of the Mahatma and to fulfill the vision of former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, Kanagaraj initiated a movement titled ‘Good India Movement’ and ‘Mission Great Chennai’ with participation by the public for a green and clean environment.

About this, Kanagaraj said, “There is a good response to the movement and people have come forward to join and participate in this.”

He is also planning one such visit to a school in Trichy on 15 August, where he will hoist the National Flag and promote the Father of the Nation’s principles among the children there.

He can be reached at 4500 2679.
