Tamilnadu will initiate project to clean up Cauvery: Palansiwami

Chennai: Taking a leaf out of the National Mission for Clean Ganga of the Central government, the Tamilnadu government would be taking up the cleaning of the Cauvery, the lifeline of the State.

Making the announcement this morning, after hoisting the national flag at Fort St George on the occasion of Independence Day, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami said the project to clean the Cauvery would be called ‘Nadanthai Vaazhi Cauvery’.

This phrase is lifted off the Tamil Sangam epic Silapathikaram, where the hero, Kovalan, sings this song in praise of the Cauvery in the Kanal Vari section. After this, he parts ways with dancer Madhavi, for whom he had abandoned his wife. He returns to his wife, Kannagi, after the Kanal Vari tiff with Madhavi.

Silapathikaram, written by Ilango Adigal, has beautiful descriptions of the Cauvery.

With the government deciding to clean up the river, it will get a new lease of life as it is polluted with industrial effluents, sewage and solid waste. It is bound to be a tough task as Tamilnadu is a lower riparian  State of the Cauvery.
