Chennai: A man who runs a leather shop at Periamet lost Rs 20 lakh in an alleged attention diversion case yesterday.
According to the police, Ishtak Ahmed (47) had posted an advertisement on social media asking suppliers for laptop bags.
Responding to his post, a man called Imran contacted him over phone and Ishtak invited him to his shop.
While the duo were talking, Imran asked for a water and Ishtak stepped out to get a bottle of water from the next shop.
When he returned, Imran was missing. When he called him over phone, Imran said he would return in a few minutes, but later his phone was switched off.
Ishtak did not think much about the odd turn of events and went about his work. Only in the evening did he realise that Rs 20 lakh kept in a bag in his shop was missing.
Subsequently, he lodged a police complaint with the Periamet police who have begun investigations.
