MCC-Murugappa Schools Hockey Tournament to begin 22 August

Chennai: Madras Cricket Club and the Murugappa Group announced a hockey tournament for Chennai City school students recently. The tournament will be conducted at Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium, Chennai, between 22 and 24 August 2019.

According to a release, in this inaugural tournament, twelve school teams will participate in a knock-out basis for the rolling trophy. The finalists will win prizes worth Rs.50,000 and outstanding players will be recognised through special awards and prizes.
The tournament logo was unveiled last week by Director, HR, Murugappa Group, Ramesh KB Menon, Managing Director, Parry Enterprises India Ltd., Arun Murugappan, Organising Secretary, MCC, C N Shanmugam, and Hony. Secretary, MCC, B Vijaykumar peaking on the occasion, Arun Murugappan said, “Murugappa Group is happy to partner with MCC in bringing another hockey tournament to Chennai. We have together been conducting the MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup, a premier hockey event in the country which has reached its 93rd edition. We believe that hockey as a sport needs support and this tournament will provide an ideal platform to hone budding talent.”

Shanmugham, Organising Secretary, MCC said, “The Madras Cricket Club, one of the premier social clubs in the country, has been organising major national level tournaments in Tennis, Squash, Cricket, Badminton, Billiards and Hockey. This tournament is a good opportunity for youngsters who are passionate about hockey and will also serve as a platform to recruit new talent. It will be an exciting tournament for sure.”
