Chidambaram’s arrest politically motivated witch-hunt, says Karthi

Chennai: “This is totally a politically motivated witch-hunt,” said Karthi Chidambaram minutes after his father and former Union minister P Chidambaram was arrested yesterday night in the INX media case.

The Congress MP who was arrested in the INX media case is currently out on bail. He flayed the CBI for arresting his father. Speaking to reporters, he said, “For events which happened in 2008 they filed an FIR in 2017 and in August 2019 they still don’t have a charge sheet which means there is no case.”

He further alleged that Chidambaram’s arrest was an attempt aimed at diverting people’s attention from serious issues. He also said that the whole drama involved in the arrest was “completely trumped up, made for television, made for media kind of spectacle.”

Speaking about his arrest, Karthi further noted that even after four raids, 20 summons and 11 days of custody, there was no charge sheet. Last year, Karthi was arrested and kept in jail for 23 days and was granted bail by the Delhi High Court. He also said that he was grilled by CBI for ten hours on most occasions when he appeared before the agencies.

He also denied the news of his father absconding and said that it was not mandatory for such a person to produce himself before the investigating agencies. He said that Chidambaram had appeared before the agency whenever summoned. CBI had sought the presence of Chidambaram only once in this case and the ED a number of times, claimed Karthi. He also said that they would face the case legally and through text judicial process and get vindicated eventually.
