Editorial: A wake-up call

The results of the by-elections to Vikravandi and Nanguneri have no doubt brought cheer to the ruling AIADMK. It has wrested the seats from the opposition parties DMK and the Congress. Meanwhile, DMK president M K Stalin said the party accepted the results in Vikravandi and Nanguneri by-polls. Stalin said DMK would work hard to win back the voters trust on the party.

“I thank people who voted for DMK and Congress candidates in Vikravandi and Nanguneri Assembly constituencies. AIADMK has won due to money power and abuse of power,” he said in a statement. “As in the past, we will not jump in joy if we win and mourn if we lose. The efforts of party functionaries in these two constituencies have not gone waste,” said Stalin.

Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami said the people have reposed their faith in AIADMK government after seeing the developmental and welfare schemes. Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam too echoed similar views. Analysts say that these wins have shown that the AIADMK — by roping in Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and actor Vijayakanth’s Desiya Murpokku Dravidar Kazhagam (DMDK) — has formed an alliance to reckon with in Tamilnadu.
